GSM stands for "Global System for Mobile Communication". At the beginning, it was the acronym of Groupe Spécial Mobile , developed in 1982 by the European Conference of Postal and Telecommunications Administrations and was intended to become an European standard, and now it is probably the most popular standard for mobile phone technology in the whole world.

Currently, GSM signals are spread in the 850, 900, 1800 and 1900 Mhz frequencies. GSM belongs to the group of mobile communications technologies commonly known as Second Generation (2G).

Reach of GSM Technology

According to the GSM Association - an organization devoted to the task of promoting GSM standard - it has been estimated that roughly 82% of the users of mobile telephony in the world has a GSM-enabled cell phone.

That counts for about 2 billion persons in 212 countries, which has made GSM the de facto standard, what enables GSM users to roam their phones and adds portability to the portfolio of benefits of GSM cell phones. It has to be noted that many operators lock the phones, which makes the issue of portability something unexplainably difficult.

SMS and GSM

One of the striking features of GSM was the development of a very cheap and affordable option to voice calls, the Short Message Service - also known as SMS - which was first implemented together with the standard and introduced a whole new concept in the life of millions of people.

In some countries where the prices of regular calls through the cell phones tend to be prohibitive, SMS not just became a draft-style solution, but it became more of a cliché, and in fact, in some places like Latin America, SMS is so widely spread that it tends to be used more extensively than even simple voice calls.

Locked and Unlocked Cell Phone issues

It is not a classified secret of the CIA that many providers lock the cell phones, so as to avoid that the user can change of provider in a fast manner. What most of the customers do not know is that there is no reason why they have to buy locked cell phones.

In fact, in my humble point of view, there is something of unethical in the whole process of locking a cell phone. It is like cutting the democracy of choosing with which mobile cell provider I want to work.

What it is also ignored is that there is nothing that prevents the user from unlocking the cell phone by him/herself, BUT the strong chance of not achieving his/her pursuit. While it is not so difficult, it does in fact require some basic knowledge of software and how the cell phone works. And geeky passion for electronics, in some extreme cases. Again, personally, why would someone buy it locked, when there are strong chances that getting an unlocked one since the beginning be less tortuous and desperating?

Pure Mobile: A Shopping Portal of Unlocked GSM Cell Phones

1-800-507-8819, Monday thru Friday, 10-18h00 EST is the first eye-catchy feature of Pure Mobile. The site - a shopping portal by all means - is a streamlined, well designed one. It deals with the Unlocked Cell Phone paradigm.

Another thing that is to be highlighted is the trust-rank of the site, it is featured positively at CNET, eBay and Yahoo Shopping. For the PayPal "fans", the site accepts payments through the popular system.

appleiphonemThe offer of cell phone models is also impressive, it can be found the simple models to the advanced, highly sold as the popular iPhone or the BlackBerry Phone. The former is a special case. Since its launch on 2007, the iPhone became an object-of-cult among the Geek community. It also raised the public concern on the rights of consumer, as the iPhone is dogmatically the locked cell phone per excellence.

When checking the section of the iPhone, it could not escape from my gaze some facts detailed, as the chance to use the phone in Cingular, T-Mobile, Fido, Rogers and other GSM Carriers and that it works under any GSM frequency. It is also impressive the high popularity of the gadget.
