Practical thinking should a compulsory subject in the pensa of every career all over the world. Just joking! But, when one considers how difficult is to find a young professional with a developed practical sense, the idea does not seem to be so absurd as it might sound.

Consider this: most of the highly successful professionals in all of the fields of the human activity achieve high success when his/her abilities to communicate and find practical solutions start to increase. In some persons, practical thinking and communication skills are almost natural, but one should not rely on genetics to reach success. Not at all.

The Leadership Thing: What is the leader, just to start.

As my boss used to tell me: the leader is someone who is capable of tracing the path for everyone, getting the balance of the group and allow (and encourage that) that every member of the team throws the best of his/her potential. I would add to the definition that the leader is like the brain that connects the actions of the fingers with the perceptions of the nose. Ugly example, i know.

And to become a leader - if you are not a natural born one - there is a long way up the stairs. First, practical thinking must be put in the basket. Then, increased awareness of the impact of the communications and the way that the "form" influences the final results of the human interactions.

Finally, a comprehension of the persons and a high intuition is compulsory to become a leader. Related to the ability to listen carefully and fill in the gaps of the messages that the persons send to us. Being the messages not only in words, but in diverse expressions such as gestures. A leader must be able to interpret even the apparently insignificant signs of the persons.

And the leader has to be able to accept responsibilities, and delegate functions. Essential as the 1+1=2 formula, the leader is the head of the team, and his main function is to coordinate the actions of the team, as if of the human body and the brain were we talking about.

Is the Leader born or can become?

One of the philosophical questions of life, with a practical answer: the leader can be born to be and not be it, or not be born but become one.

As with genetics in general, there is a tendency to become a leader in a reduced segment of the population, but it has to be complemented with the right environment and formation to become one. Or else, the leader will not show up ever.

And, if the genetics is not favorable, then environment can influence. The same effect that can be gotten when the IQ is not so high, but the constant effort replaces the apparent disability. Ask Newton about it.

What i really mean is that with the right attitude and the right kind of education, the leadership skills - though low at the beginning - can be further increased and throw as a result a well-formed leader (which might have some advantages over the natural born one).

How to Increase the Leadership Skills by means of education?

Again, increase your practical thinking, your abilities to communicate and the fast response to throw practical solutions. That is the part that the formal education can help you to boost.

How? Easier to put it as an example, rather than explaining it. Choose the appropriate courses, f.i, take language courses where grammar and orthography are taught, just to begin. Then, enlist into a seminar of commercial writing. A good lecture about the power of positive thinking and maybe another text about the uses of logic and methodology to solve practical real life problems.

But, even more important is that you put your efforts in the self-development of good habits of productivity and start self-criticizing. Track your results (on an Excel worksheet or a piece of paper, whatever) and start climbing up the ladder.

You have to keep in mind that there is a limit in the professional growth of the individual, where the leadership skills are absolutely required and - by no means - should you be unprepared to step into.
